Some issues of Arabic grammar according to ‘Abd al- Qāhir al-Jurjānī

Abstract

This study deals with some issues of Arabic grammar according to ‘Abd al- Qāhir al-Jurjānī through some of his books such as Dlā`il al-I‘jāz, al-Jumal fī al-Naḥw, Sharḥ al-Jumal fī al-Naḥw, al-‘Āwāmil al-Naḥwiyya, and al-Muqtṣid fī Sharḥ Risālt al-Īḏāḥ. The main idea of the study revolves around explaining some of ‘Abd al- Qāhir al-Jurjānī's efforts in ridding Arabic grammar of the mixture of philosophy and logic and returning it to the realm of pure Arabic rhetoric, especially as he discusses the issue of inimitability in the Holy Qur'ān.

The research aims to show the extent of ‘Abd al- Qāhir's ability to mix the sciences of rhetoric and grammar as if they are one science that is indispensable to one over the other. He gives meaning his first attention and gives it the greatest importance in the sentence without completely ignoring the rules of syntax.

The study is divided into a preface that deals with the life of ‘Abd al- Qāhir al-Jurjānī, three sections and a conclusion. As for the first section, it talks about analogy. The second section deals with argumentation. The third section is limited to the governor.

The research has reached results that I consider important in this field. al-Jurjani is characterized in his grammatical approach by transcending the issue of linguistic fluency or judging correctness and incorrectness over linguistic structures to search for secrets and aesthetics and taste those structures. The research has also found that ‘Abd al-Qāhir resorted to explaining some grammatical phenomena and judgments according to psychological principles, as he was able to combine in his reasoning between the practical and mental aspects on the one hand and the rhetorical and tasteful ones on the other hand.
