This study monitors some of the artistic features that appeared in the short story collection “Next to the Water” by the Jordanian storyteller Amani Suleiman Daoud. It examines the structure of character and place, their impact on meaning, and reveals the gender overlap in this collection.
The study seeks to identify the most important artistic methods used by the storyteller to draw the characters of its story collection, and to place them in an unusual way. In order to present a non-stereotypical image of women in the feminist story.
This study took the inductive approach in reading narrative texts, and then followed the analytical approach in revealing the structure of the female character and its repercussions on places and events.
The study revealed the variation in the image of men in the feminist story, as it ranged between patriarchal authoritarianism and the friendly image. It showed that the storyteller was able to present new visions related to women’s issues, with multiple stylistic techniques in which she maintained the combination of poetic language and narrative language. The study revealed new gender boundaries. In the structure of the narrative composition, the writer combined autobiography, poetic composition, and the short story.
