Abstract

This study aims to elucidate ambiguity as a rhetorical feature generated by the interaction between lexical form and contextual framework within the sciences of Arabic rhetoric. It does so through the analysis of selected rhetorical issues that reveal its nature and mechanisms of multiplicity, particularly where semantic plurality intensifies to produce suggestive depth and open the text to multiple interpretive possibilities.

The significance of the study lies in its attempt to provide a comprehensive rhetorical treatment of ambiguity, in light of the scarcity of research that approaches the phenomenon from an integrated perspective linking the three rhetorical disciplines. Many previous studies have confined themselves to semantic and lexical ambiguity, without addressing ambiguity within rhetorical structures and issues in Arabic rhetoric.

Methodologically, the study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach grounded in the examination of classical rhetorical discussions. It concludes that ambiguity is not a defect but a rhetorical component whose effect depends on the recipient’s interpretive awareness and the availability of contextual cues regulating meaning. The study further underscores the necessity of examining ambiguity within a pragmatic framework that balances aesthetic value with communicative clarity.

Finally, it recommends extending research to additional rhetorical issues to uncover the rhetorical and pragmatic dimensions of ambiguity.
