Abstract

This study aims at considering the poem: “Songs of the Defeated Knight” by the Jordanian poet Mahdi Nosier. It can be described as a compound poem of an epic style and the study is hermeneutic that starts from the text and ends with it. It avoids all preconceived notions produced on the text and adopts an interpretive approach in reading it. This process of interpretation employs all possible aspects of knowledge so as to read and deconstruct this poetic text, bearing in mind the structure of the poem as well as its rhetoric and suggestions.

This is carried out with an eye on which constitutes a significant feature of the poem. The research work concludes that the poet has been inspired by the human heritage and its various components and that the latter employs them in his endeavor to comprehend the present and its different and complex challenges simultaneously. The poet in this attempt to comprehend the dilemma of present has no conclusive answers, and does not claim to have any, for the text seeks only to state more questions. This is because reality is hard to grasp or interpret in the light of its complexity and its rapid variables. He cannot alter or change it. Therefore, he resorts to the world of writing and creativity in order to express himself or fulfill his artistic aims. It thus becomes his only shelter, which shells him from this outer world.
